Bogolanfini, created by the Bamana people of Mali, dates back to the 12th century, when artisans hand-wove narrow cotton strips, stitched them into panels, and painted each motif using fermented river mud and plant dyes. The process unfolded over weeks, sometimes months, and no symbol was ever placed without intention.

This fabric carries the warm ochre, brown, and black palette that is characteristic of traditional Bamana work. Checker motifs reference ideas of balance and duality, while the organic shield-like forms echo protective symbolism found throughout Malian visual language.
